THE family of a man who fell to his death at the headquarters of Abbey National three years ago have suffered another setback in their campaign for justice'.
Father-of-three Richard Chang died after being interviewed by a private investigation company, Kroll, brought in to investigate letters sent to top Abbey executives alleging corruption within the bank.
The coroner returned a verdict of suicide at a hearing, but the family feel there was not enough opportunity for them to call witnesses for it to be a fair hearing.
The family also believes there were flaws in the police investigation.
Members of Mr Chang's family, including two of his sisters and his mother, visited Holburn police station on Friday last week, hoping to see documents from the police investigation.
However, they were told they would not be able to see them because of the rules governing disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act.
They did manage to hold a meeting with a director of the Criminal Prosecution Service, Rene Barclay and the police officer who headed the investigation, Inspector Heather Carpenter.
Jackie Chang, Richard's sister, who had travelled from Birmingham for the meeting said: "They had no intention of releasing any documents and just wanted to reassure the family they had done everything they could.
"But when we questioned them on discrepancies in their investigation they told us that all police investigations have inconsistencies."
Mr Chang's other sister, Valerie, said: "The meeting lasted for four hours which I don't think they were expecting.
"Although we didn't get to see the documents we wanted we did get them to agree that they will consider reopening the case if we can come up with new evidence.
"We do have a couple of leads which we are going to follow up in order to get a judicial review, but that will cost £20,000."
The Metropolitan Police told the Ealing Times that they make all the decisions on releasing information like this in line with the Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection Act.
A spokesman said: "Following the death of Richard Chang, police worked closely with Richard Chang's partner at that time and a verdict of suicide was reached by the coroner.
"All the evidence established by police was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service to review the potential for any criminal charges to be brought.
"The MPS have carefully considered each question and request for information made by the family of Mr Chang and have, where possible, answered questions about the investigation."
Virendra Sharma, MP for Ealing-Southall, met with Valerie Chang this week to discuss the case and see how he could help the family.
