POLICE say they have only had 'limited dialogue' with Climate Camp protesters after clashes at the day of direct action.

Commander Jo Kaye of the Met Police said: "We have policed a number of marches and actions today. The number of officers and the types of tactics used has varied based on the situation with which we have been faced.

"I have stated right from the start that what we want to do is facilitate lawful protest, that is our duty and something we are committed to doing. We have had a very limited dialogue with the organisers and I would call for more - especially as they are continuing with their phase of mass action."

He added: "Our policing plan will continue through the night, and during the course of tomorrow. We will continue to base our officer numbers and tactics on what we are dealing with at that time. All of our officers are thoroughly briefed to use their powers professionally and proportionately and that will continue.

"At this stage we are continuing to police a demonstration outside the BAA building, totalling about 350 people. We will continue to police them whilst their demonstration continues to be lawful."
