SELLING tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18 will be illegal from next month when new legislation comes into effect.
The minimum age at which anyone can buy cigarettes, cigars, loose rolling tobacco and rolling paper in England and Wales will be raised from 16 to 18 on Monday, October 1.
Kathy Sparks, deputy director for environment and consumer protection at Hillingdon Council, said: "Raising the age by two years will mean it will be easier for retailers to spot underage smokers and help stop young people becoming addicted to nicotine.
"The council will be carrying out trading standards investigations on premises and those found selling tobacco products to anyone below the age of 18 may find themselves before a court."
