A YOUNG couple have embarked on a 230 mile walk along canal paths in memory of their grandmothers who both lost their lives to cancer.

Richard Hakier, 26, and Rebecca Sellens, 26, will follow a trail from Uxbridge to Huddersfield to raise money for Breast Cancer Care.

During the ten-day journey, which started on Saturday, September 1, at Uxbridge Locks near Oxford Road, they will be stopping at a different town each day before reaching their finishing point at Marsden, in Huddersfield, on Monday, September 10.

Richard and Rebecca, who are from Croydon, have already raised £3,000, and said they chose to start the walk in Uxbridge because it was the closest point to Huddersfield on the Grand Union Canal, while still being in London.

Richard, whose grandmother died in October 2000, said: "When our grans were ill, we travelled by train from London to Huddersfield to visit them as often as possible.

"This time that same journey will take on a whole new significance"

Rebecca said: "After a long fight with breast cancer, my gran died last year.

"She was the type of lady who didn't talk about her health, mainly because she was scared to.

"When she found a lump, she hid it and it cost her dearly.

"Breast Cancer Care do a great job in getting the message out there and we shouldn't be scared to get it."
