It was a special but sad day for Hillingdon Abbots rugby club, as they kicked off their new season on Sunday.

The return saw players and parents hold a minute's silence to mark the recent passing of popular club chairman Laurence Cummings, who died last month.

Laurence was a key member of the Hillingdon sporting community and took on many responsibilities around the club and the club say he will be missed in many ways.

A spokesperson for Hillingdon Abbots added: "Laurence will not now be with us for another game however the parents, coaches and children are forever thankful for the enormous contribution he made to the club and to the wider community.

"He only ever wanted to take our club forward and we will continue and make him proud.

"Our rugby section is a small and tight knit team and we are grateful to the volunteers who have quickly offered to assist with the start of the season."
