It was a case of déjà vu for Viktor Frydrych when he stepped onto Court 6 at Wimbledon for his Boys’ Singles match against Sebastian Gorzny.

For Frydrych it was a Junior Wimbledon debut but not the first time he had played at the All England Club, having played a regional tournament at the site when he was younger.

And it just so happened that he played that match on the exact same court where he was beaten 6-3 6-4 by his American opponent on Sunday.

Despite defeat, it was an incredibly positive experience for the Welsh-born 16-year-old, who revelled in having home crowd support.

He said: “When I was around 10 years old I was here. I was playing an exhibition, a regional tournament. I actually played on the exact same court on which I played my match, which was quite nice.

“It felt nice because of the crowd, and it’s nice to play in the UK where I’m from. I felt very supported at the start because it’s my first time playing a junior Grand Slam so I was a little bit nervous, didn’t know what to expect. I was rushing a little bit too much, but I enjoyed it. I had fun out there and that’s what it’s all about it.

“I’m still proud of myself even though I lost that match. I still have next year and the year after, so I’m excited. I’m looking forward to that and I’m going to be ready for next year.

“A couple of good mates were out there, they were really supporting me, and of course my mum and my sister.

“It’s been very nice. It was a little bit windy, but apart from that it was very luxurious and it was amazing. It’s one of the best tournaments to play at really.”

Despite a positive experience on his Wimbledon debut Frydrych is refusing to rest on his laurels, with strong targets for the foreseeable future.

“My short-term goal is to be top ten in juniors, or even number one if I can,” he added.

“Long term, playing here in the men’s tournament and basically being one of the best in the world hopefully.

“I was always top-ten in my age group, I think my best ranking for my age group was top six. I think the biggest highlight so far has been playing for Great Britain really, playing in the Winter Cup. “Hopefully I’ll play Davis Cup in the future, and now being selected for the Junior Davis Cup. That’s been the biggest highlight for me.”

Meanwhile, there was success for Bridgend’s Mimi Xu as she started her Girls’ Singles campaign.

Xu beat Carolina Kuhl 7-6 (5) 6-3 in fine style and now faces 15th seed Lucia Peyre in the second round.
