PET lovers are being urged to sign up as volunteer foster carers by Dogs Trust West London, based at Harefield.

The team is facing a record number of inquiries from people wanting to hand over their dogs, so more than ever they need temporary homes for them.

Some dogs need additional care, such as medical or post-operative, for which a home environment can be more appropriate than kennels.

Pavan Matharu and Jo Turner are co-ordinators of the Home from Home fostering scheme at Harefield.

“We are facing a crisis as our kennel space is really stretched,” they said “We need to act now to be there for as many dogs as possible.

“Fostering a dog is a wonderful opportunity for dog lovers who are currently unable to have a dog of their own.

“We cover the essential costs and you will be playing the most important role, giving stability, love, and care to a dog in need.”

Nicholas Turner says he has never looked back since becoming a foster carer.

He said: “I worked for several years as a volunteer at a Guide Dog training centre and often took dogs home with me at weekends if they were suffering kennel stress.

“I enjoyed this very much and later approached Dogs Trust to offer myself as a fosterer, which I have thoroughly enjoyed doing.

“The Home from Home team are excellent in providing guidance and support, as well as all the practical things such as bedding, equipment, treats and toys.”

Since the Home from Home scheme was launched in 2013, almost 12,000 dogs have been cared for by foster carers.
