HILLINGDON Labour say they remain opposed to the relocation of Uxbridge Library to the Civic Centre.
The move, from the High Street, was endorsed on Thursday (22) at the budget meeting when spending plans and council tax level were announced by the ruling Conservative group.
Labour had been supporting a petition to oppose the library’s relocation.
Conservatives say the opposition group had failed to identify an additional £400,000 running cost for the present building.
Cllr Peter Curling, Labour group leader, said: “[We] continue to oppose the closure of Uxbridge Library and voted against the budget that included the library cut.
“We continue to support the residents in this fight and believe Uxbridge central library should remain in the town centre.’
Danny Beales, Labour parliamentary candidate for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, added: “Hillingdon Conservatives now pretending the closure of Uxbridge library is someone’s else’s fault is frankly insulting to residents.”
