HILLINGDON Council today has moved to reassure people the Beck Theatre in Hayes will not be closing, though it’s not clear who will be managing it.

The current operator, Trafalgar Theatres, has given notice that it will not be continuing beyond January.

The firm and the council have been  locked in negotiations over future management of the theatre.

Hillingdon wants to reduce the burden on council taxpayers by asking Trafalgar to contribute towards running costs.

Currently, Trafalgar pays no rent for use of the building and has limited repair liability. In addition, the council has been paying a subsidy towards the Beck’s operation.

The leader of Hillingdon Council, Cllr Ian Edwards, said today: “We would like to reassure residents there are no plans to close the Beck.

“Trafalgar Theatres has now informed us of its final decision to cease operations at the Beck.

“However, the council is working hard to secure a new operating partner as soon as possible to minimise disruption and ensure a smooth transition.

“We are proud to have one of the best theatre offers in west London.

“We recognise the valuable contributions our theatres make to our communities and are committed to retaining a strong arts and culture offer.”

The opposition Labour group on Hillingdon Council failed in their bid to have an emergency motion heard on the subject at last night's (26) council meeting.

Conservative councillors rejected the motion before it could be heard.

A Hillingdon Liberal Democrat spokesperson said, of Cllr Edwards' statement: "The bit about ‘working hard’ to find a new partner means they have not found anyone even prepared to enter negotiations."

A public campaign to save the Beck escalated over the weekend with a public meeting at the theatre and a demonstration outside Uxbridge Station.
