COMMERCIAL theatre consultants have been appointed by Hillingdon Council to find a long-term operator for the Beck Theatre in Hayes.
The borough had been seeking to negotiate a new lease with Trafalgar Theatres for it to continue managing the Beck at a peppercorn rent, with the council being responsible for essential repairs and maintenance.
Trafalgar wants Hillingdon to pay an additional ongoing subsidy, but the council has refused as it considers finances are already under severe pressure.
Trafalgar's contract will end on January 13 and the Beck will close while consultants seek new management.
Cllr Ian Edwards, the council leader, said: “We recognise the valuable contributions our theatres make to communities and are committed to retaining a strong community arts and culture.
“Council officers and elected councillors continue to work tirelessly to secure the venue’s long-term stability as a commercial theatre without financial subsidy from the taxpayer.
"The consultants will begin their work immediately.”
