CHANGES to the way its social housing is allocated were approved last night (7) by Hillingdon Council’s cabinet.
The key changes include:
- making clearer the priority order for rehousing
- giving increased priority to the most vulnerable residents and those who have lived in the borough for 10 years or more
- allowing more overcrowded households to bid for properties below their assessed need.
The changes follow an 11-week consultation in which residents had the opportunity to provide feedback and shape the plans.
Of those who responded, 62 to 75 per cent agreed or strongly agreed with the proposed revisions.
Councils are required to have a method of assessing housing need, advertising social housing owned by the council or housing associations and allocating them accordingly.
The updated policy will be implemented from March 1 next year. Residents with existing housing applications will be contacted by the council.
Cllr Steve Tuckwell, Cabinet Member for Planning, Housing and Growth said: “These changes will improve our ability to distribute social housing fairly, prioritising households with long-term links to the borough and our most vulnerable residents.
“However, it’s important we are transparent. Demand for housing support across London has outgrown the supply of homes and the sad reality is that many residents who join our housing register could wait more than 10 years.
“If you are worried about your housing situation or feel at risk of homelessness it’s vital to act immediately.
“Don’t wait until you are actually homeless to seek support.
“For many residents, the best chance of finding a secure home is through the private rented sector. Work with us to help you access support and find an affordable property.
