CHRISTMAS is a time of year when burglars and robbers tend to take advantage of empty homes and expensive presents. The Metroplitan Police want to try to prevent this by issuing advice.
Ruislip and Northwood Police are launching a crime prevention initiative over the Christmas period.
A special crime prevention bus will be visiting several locations in Ruislip and Northwood and officers will be give out advice and hand out leaflets about what not to do over Christmas.
Inspector Dave Burgum, of Ruislip Police, is warning residents to be more careful by following a few simple crime prevention tips but has also promised to do his best to combat crime during the festive period.
He said: "There will be high visibility patrols over the festive period to combat those who would spoil Christmas for others.
"I intend to make it a good Christmas for all and we need to work together to stop and disrupt would-be thieves."
Police are also urging people to exercise caution when out Christmas shopping. Shoppers should carry handbags close to them with the clasp facing inwards and ensure house and car keys are kept in their pockets, not handbags.
Bags containing Christmas shopping should also be carried close to the body and should never be left unattended in a car, even in the boot, as a potential thief may have watched them being put into the boot.
With more and more people attending Christmas parties and socializing over the next few weeks, police are warning people to take extra care by making sure you know where your handbag, wallet and mobile phone are at all times.
For more information about Crime Prevention visit the bus during the times stated below or ask at your local police station.
